I’m a chartered accountant. I’ve just sold my firm. And I’ve started the most boring YouTube channel in New Zealand — on purpose.
Here’s the thing I kept coming back to after twenty years working alongside rural businesses across New Zealand. The gap between an operation that thrives financially and one that struggles is almost never about how hard people work.
It’s almost always about whether they understand the financial rules of the game they’re playing.
Tax. Trusts. Succession. Business structure. Cash flow. These aren’t glamorous topics. Nobody gets excited about them at the pub or over a cup of tea after a long day at work. But they matter. Enormously. And most never get them explained properly — in plain English, without the jargon.
That’s what this is.
The Boring Accountant is a YouTube channel and a newsletter for New Zealand business owners who want to understand their finances — without needing a law degree to do it.
Every week I’ll cover one topic that directly affects your farm or rural business. Some weeks it’ll be tax. Some weeks it’ll be structure, or succession, or the financial decisions that determine whether a farming business builds wealth or just survives.
All of it will be practical. All of it will be specific to New Zealand. And all of it will be in plain English.
